Mosquito fogging in northeast Carson City happening early Friday

On Friday, June 6, 2025, starting at approximately 4 a.m. and ending at approximately 5:30 a.m., Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS) will conduct ground fogging as part of the Mosquito Abatement Program.

The ground fogging will take place in northeast Carson City, including the Riverview Park neighborhood and the Apollo Drive area. This treatment aims to control the adult mosquito population and protect public health.

Ground Fogging Procedure

Ground fogging, also known as adulticide, involves CCHHS vehicles driving through designated streets, emitting a spray or fog that targets adult flying mosquitoes. The operation is designed to reduce the number of mosquitoes in these areas and minimize the risk of illness to the public.

The effectiveness of this treatment can last from one hour to up to three days, depending on environmental conditions and the presence of mosquitoes. The fog targets mosquitoes in the air but may not reach those resting in lawns or shrubbery. For additional protection, residents are encouraged to use a barrier spray around their properties.

CCHHS uses ULV (ultralow volume) chemicals, which are released in fine droplets. Approximately one ounce of the adulticide product can treat a one-acre area, ensuring efficient coverage with minimal chemical usage.

Protective Measures and Recommendations

While ground fogging can significantly reduce the mosquito population, it may not eliminate all mosquitoes in the area. Therefore, CCHHS advises residents to take personal protective measures, including:

  • Avoid Peak Mosquito Activity: Stay indoors during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Wear Protective Clothing: Light-colored, tightly woven clothing that covers arms and legs can help prevent mosquito bites. Tuck trousers into boots or socks and button collars.
  • Secure Your Home: Ensure that door and window screens are in good repair to keep mosquitoes out. Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or to protect infants in unscreened areas.
  • Use Insect Repellents: When outdoors, especially during mosquito activity times, wear protective clothing and use insect repellent. Repellents with DEET offer longer protection; concentrations of 10% to 25% are generally sufficient. Apply repellents to clothing whenever possible and use sparingly on exposed skin. Always follow label instructions and consult a physician before using repellents on young children.

Safety Precautions During Fogging

Residents are advised to take the following precautions during the ground fogging application:

  • Stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.
  • Turn off air conditioning units to prevent drawing in the fog.
  • Bring outdoor pet food and water dishes inside.
  • Cover or remove children’s outdoor toys, small pools, fishponds, and bird baths.
  • Avoid treated areas until the pesticide has dried.
