May is National Water Safety Month

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, which means many Nevadans are expected to celebrate by the water; whether it be in a pool, lake, or river, now is the time to brush up on water safety tips.

According to the American Red Cross drowning is the leading cause of death for children. Every year the organization highlights a few simple tips that could save a life:

  • Never swim alone
  • Always wear a life jacket while boating
  • Know your physical limits
  • Understand the risks of your water environment, like the strength of the current or depth of the water

On top of these tips, the American Red Cross provides in-depth information on water safety you can review here.

If you want to get your little ones water safety ready, Carson City Aquatic Facility offers Grown Ups and Guppies, a parent-driven course, supervised by an instructor, that helps prepare children for swim lessons and acclimates them to the water.

The course is designed for ages 6 months to 4 years. Visit the Carson City Aquatic Facility website for more information and how to sign up.
