Margaret Walton-Roberts

Margaret Walton-Roberts
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Walton-Roberts. She was mother to William, Samuel and Calum, wife and partner to Ben. Daughter to Sylvia and Wilfred, sister to Hugh, Claire, Monica, Joe and John; daughter-in-law to Jenny and Edward, sister-in-law to Terry, Jackie, Lisa, Nick, Natasha, Will and Janis; aunt to Niki, Georgina, Charlotte, Connor, Kathlyn, Freddy, Thomas, Weezie, Olivia and Jessica.

Margaret was a friend to everyone who knew her, a scholar, a teacher, mentor. She built connections, from England, where she went to school and later Manchester University, to Vancouver, where she earned a Master’s degree and then a PhD from the University of British Columbia. Margaret began her teaching career in Kitchener/Waterloo, becoming an integral part of the Geography and Environmental Studies department at Wilfrid Laurier University as well being instrumental in the formation of the International Migration Research Center (IMRC) at the Balsillie School for International Affairs.

Margaret traveled extensively for her work and pleasure, making lasting connections across Europe, India, Australia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA. She relished meeting people and understanding their lives and motivations. She published widely but always made time to support students, administrators and faculty across the university. She received multiple awards, most recently being the Order of Wilfrid Laurier University.

Margaret greatest accomplishment, her boys, including Ben, remember her as a giving person, one who constantly kept things moving. A lifelong teacher, she offered encouragement and good advise, always. Margaret was the driving force at home. Financially astute, she impassioned the boys to make good decisions and allowed them to flourish in a world full of diving, skiing, biking and adventuring. Risk assessment needed to be learned by allowing them to at times test the limits and make appropriate choices.

Margaret loved the beach, for walking or swimming, her dog(s), good food, cocktails, baking, being efficient, washing on the line, finding a painting in an auction, cycling, yoga, skiing, snorkeling, being present in nature, getting a good deal or something on sale, Marmite, travelling, museums, sailing, a good fire, winter at the cottage, a good book, the theatre, smelly soaps or a nice meal out, always enthusiastic, always game to try something new.

The family would like to thank everyone who has supported Margaret through her battle with cancer, especially the medical professionals, some of whom have really tough jobs. It has truly been a difficult and yet a special journey. To everyone who has sent messages of support in the last few months and to every one who stepped up with meals and assistance with appointments, a heart felt thank you. To those who visited or talked to Margaret and provided us with support in the last few weeks, we are grateful. Until her final days Margaret remained strong, interested, engaged and funny with all who visited or called. She will be greatly missed.

Cremation arrangements entrusted to the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467.

Margaret was very mindful of the charities she generously supported. She requested no flowers, but if you wish to donate to a charity that you think she would support, then please do so.
