Luba Shumyhora

Luba (Datkun) Shumyhora passed away peacefully in her home on September 22, 2025 at the age of 92, surrounded by her family after a long illness. Born in Ternopil, Ukraine, to the late Wasyl and Sophie Datkun, she came to the United States in 1950 at the age of eighteen following her great love, Jaroslaw (Jerry) Shumyhora. That same year, they married and began building a life together.

Bridgeport, CT became their home, where they raised six children, kept their Ukrainian traditions alive, and opened their home to family and friends with open arms and full tables. Luba, an avid cook and baker, ensured her family would always know the flavors and comfort of her homeland. She also worked for 25 years at Country Home Bakery before retiring in 1998.

Luba will be remembered for her humor, her joy in singing and dancing, her unconditional love for her family, and the many ways she made each of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren feel special. To her, everyone she loved was “the best one” – and to her family, she was truly the best one.

Luba is survived by her two sons, Zenon Shumyhora (Susan) and Raymond Shumyhora; four daughters, Irene O’Sadcia (Paul), Lydia Froilan, Olga Davila, and Christina Froilan; eight grandchildren, Sasha (Denis), Justin (Heather), Gina, Nicholas, Daniel (Hayley), Jonathan (Amanda), and Jennifer (Dion); fourteen great-grandchildren, Dante, Madelyn, Alanah, Evalyn, Joseph, Dominic, Kennedy, Aleeah, Layla, Maverick, Wade, Emerson, Lucas, and Wren; one nephew Andrew Czubatyj; two granddogs, Belle and Nala; and two grandcats, Sandy and Rocket.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, Jerry, in 2015; by her sisters, Zenovia Czubatyj (Lubomyr) of Milford and Olga Maskalyk of Ukraine; her brothers Eugene Datkun of Canada, Raymond Datkun and Stephan Datkun of Bridgeport, and Zenon Datkun of Ukraine, her granddaughter, Rachel Shumyhora of Stratford, and nephew Michael Czubatyj of Milford.

A special thanks to the amazing and compassionate nurses and staff at Davies Dialysis of Shelton, Complete Care at Kimberly Hall South in Windsor (especially Gloria), and CT Access.
