John McDougall

John (Jack) McDougall, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025 at the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. Jack was born in 1947 to John George McDougall and Dorothy Claire McDougall (née Boulton) in Elizabeth, NJ, and was raised in Linden, NJ.

Jack and his beloved wife, Janet (née Kalin), were long time residents of Cranford, New Jersey. Jack and Janet were married for fifty years and have two children, Maureen and Keith. Jack adored Keith and his wife Cecilia’s children, Cassandra and Rebecca. Through recent years watching his granddaughters enjoy the same beach house where he spent his childhood summers, Jack found joy and peace at the Jersey Shore. His family will treasure the memories formed there forever.

A lover of rock and roll, Jack took great pride in his record collection, spanning more than four decades. But his love of music went beyond being a mere collector—he enjoyed little more than amazing his family and friends with his extensive knowledge and recall of rock and pop music history and seemingly boundless anecdotes that never ceased to impress. This passion will live on with Janet, Maureen, and Keith, although none will be able to match the enthusiasm and energy Jack displayed as DJ Daddy Cool in the 90s.

The breweriana and beer collectibles world will miss Jack dearly and will always remember him as the inaugural Beerdrinker of the Year award winner, an achievement, as anyone who knew Jack is aware, he did not take lightly. Since the 1970s, he has been extensively involved in activities that range from serving as past president of the Eastern Coast Breweriana Association (ECBA) and the Garden State Chapter of the Brewery Collectibles Club of America (BCCA), co-founding the Bar Tourists of America, being elected to both the BCCA’s and the Garden State BCCA chapter’s hall of fame, and building a wealth of knowledge specializing in Schaefer breweriana and brew pub and microbrewery coasters. Jack and Janet found lifelong friendships among the breweriana community, touring countless brew pubs throughout the US (often with Maureen and Keith in tow), but will always hold dear their Bofferding trips to Scotland and Europe with close friends.

Jack was predeceased by his parents; his sister-in-law, Helen Kalin-Van Rossum; his niece Cherylee Van Rossum; and his Aunt and Uncle, Ruth and Andy Youchock.

In addition to his wife, children, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, Jack is survived by his brother Dan McDougall and his sister-in-law, Wendy McDougall (née Mason); his nieces and nephews, Paul and Michelle Van Rossum, Craig and Johanne Van Rossum, Reed and Kathleen Van Rossum, Lauren and Grant Harm, and Carey McDougall; and his cousins Andrea, Ed, Chelsea, and Kelly Baker, and Linda and Tom Jackowski.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Monday, June 23rd from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue West, Cranford, NJ, 07016. Visitation will continue Tuesday June 24th from 11-12, interment will follow Hazelwood Cemetery, 64 Lake Avenue, Colonia, NJ 07067.
