James E. Igoe, Jr. died surrounded by family at Vassar Brothers Hospital on Monday, May 26, 2025. He was born October 4,1934, the son of James E. Igo and Genevieve (Meany) Igo of Newburgh, New York.
He graduated from New York Military Academy in 1952. He attended the University of Arizona, followed by the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1958 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation, he served as an officer and he was honorably discharged in 1963. He returned to the Hudson Valley spending over 27 years as a Facility Engineer at IBM in Poughkeepsie.
Jim and Andrea (Herbison) met on a blind date in July 1956. They were married at St. Patrick’s Church in Newburgh, NY on June 28, 1958 and shared 67 happy years together during which time they renewed their wedding vows multiple times, most notably at Cana in the Holy Land on their 50th anniversary. They enjoyed traveling together across the United States, Europe, Ireland and the Holy Land where they made countless friends and memories. He was the proud parent of 5 children, 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
He was active in the community as a soccer coach, a proud Scout Leader for over 25 years serving as Assistant Scoutmaster and was an active leader within the Dutchess County Council, completing the Wood Badge Leadership program. He volunteered for the Hyde Park Fire Department and Roosevelt Fire Department Engine Company 2 where he served as recording secretary for many years. He was a proud parishioner of Holy Trinity Church for over 25 years where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, was a charter member of the Holy Trinity Knights of Columbus Council, as well as a Fourth Degree Knight with the Hyde Park Knight of Columbus Council.
He is survived by his wife and five children. James Igoe III (Kelly Ruf), Matthew Igoe (Bridgette Every), Beth Igoe Green, Andrew Igoe (Michele Newman), and John Igoe (partner Ellen Swift). Grandchildren Jenica Igoe, Leanna Igoe Russell, Nina Igoe, Garrett Igoe, Matthew Green, Katherine Green, Zachary Green, Megan Green Gallo, Mary Igoe, Jenifer Igoe Sabb, and John Igoe Jr., as well as s. Seven Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother Michael Igoe, sister Jean Igo Welsh, brother-in-law William Welsh, brother-in-law Matthew Herbison, son-in-law Jeffrey Green, and infant great granddaughter Vivian Russell.
Jim’s favorite story was about his time aboard some of the oldest naval warships of the era. USS Iowa (BB-16)-oldest battleship, USS Essex (CV-9)-oldest Aircraft Carrier, USS Saufley (DD-465) oldest Destroyer in the Atlantic Fleet. Jim likes to share with everyone that as a result of these three ships, they named a major clothing retailer after him “Old Navy”.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 from 3-7 PM at the William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at 10 AM at Holy Trinity Church, 775 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603, followed by burial at St Peter’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jim’s name, to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, https://www.t2t.org or your favorite local food pantry.
Jim will be remembered for his kind spirit, quiet strength, and deep love for his family and his faith.
