James E. Cunningham, age 83, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away at Penn Medicine in Doylestown, PA on October 10, 2025. He was born in Philadelphia, PA the son of the late Andrew and Dolores Cunningham. Jim grew up in Pottsville, PA where he was a member of the Goodwill Volunteer Fire Company where his desire to be of service to others was founded.
Jim was the beloved husband of JoAnn for 64 wonderful years. He was the loving father of Michelle Killian (her husband Robert), and John “Kevin” Cunningham (his wife Laura). He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren; Matthew (his wife Alexandra) and Grace, and by all who knew and loved him.
Jim proudly served as a Philadelphia Firefighter retiring after 38 years – stationed at Engine #22 in NE Philly and at Engine #10 in South Philadelphia. He was Vice Chairman of the Philadelphia Police and Fire Federal Credit Union, Vice President Philadelphia Fire Fighters Local #22 and a member of the Board of Directors of the Fireman’s Hall Museum. Jim was actively involved in the Mutual Order of Artisans and was a proud member of many civic and fraternal organizations. He enjoyed life’s simple pleasures like a good scotch and a cigar and had a passion for travelling especially cruises and Las Vegas. Above all else, Jim loved spending time with his loving wife JoAnn and his family and friends. Jim was a true gentleman and his quiet and steady presence served as an anchor for many. May he rest in peace and find out that the song, “In Heaven There Is No Beer” was wrong!!!
