Irene Lubig

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Lubig on Friday, September 26, 2025, at the age of 82. Irene immigrated to Detroit from Malta in 1947 with members of her family. She was the beloved wife of Joseph Lubig for 59 years where she taught us how to live a life filled with love, joy, and deep caring for others. Irene led a life of faith with friends and family at St. Michael’s in Livonia early in marriage and at St. Mary Magdalen in Brighton for the past 30 years where she worked in the kitchen to support the members of her community. Irene and her husband, Joe, were always among the first to support others in a time of need.

Irene is preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret and Marion, and her parents, Michael and Stella. She is survived by her brothers, Vic (Sylvia) and Hank (Carol); sisters, Yvonne, and Rose Marie; children, Jennifer (Yancy), Lisa (Sam), Sheri (Andy), and Joe (Pam); grandchildren Ashlyn, Cayli (Tyler), Lachlan, Henry, Elizabeth, Julia (Jack), Joey, and Olivia; and her loving husband of 59 years, Joe Lubig.

Irene lived a life of deep connection to her family and friends. Opening her home to friends, family, and people important to them was a point of pride for her and her husband, Joe. Birthday, anniversary, wedding, and cards for just about any celebration crisscrossed the country every year from Irene and she never missed a moment to celebrate those she loved. Irene attended every life event for her children and grandchildren whether it took battling local traffic, driving eight hours north to the Upper Peninsula, or flying to the Northwest.

A point of pride for Irene, was to travel back to her birthplace of Sliema, Malta with her husband, Joe, and members of her family. This trip to reconnect with relatives and the place of her birth brought so much joy to her and serves as an inspiration to family to learn about their history through food and story and to do this often with those you love.
