Gerald Henderberg

Gerald W. “Jerry” Henderberg, Sr., 90, ,of Rome, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025 at Rome Health. Born in Rome on June 13, 1935, he was a son of the late Leon and Bertha (Myers) Henderberg. He was a graduate of Rome Free Academy and on December 25, 1964, he was united in marriage to Joyce Yager. She passed away on February 3, 2020.

For many years, Jerry was a proud truck driver for Lynn Scott Trucking, where he was known for his reliability, hard work, and steady hand on the road. But long before his days hauling freight, Jerry thrilled crowds across the country as a motorcycle and automobile stunt driver with Jack Kochman’s Hell Drivers and Joie Chitwood Thrill Show, performing daring stunts that left audiences in awe. One of the highlights of his career came when he performed six shows a day at the 1964–65 World’s Fair — an experience he cherished.

His love for speed and excitement started with performing at local fairs with his own troupe, the Jerry Henderberg Thrill Show. He also raced flat-track motorcycles for Dick’s Harley-Davidson of Rome. Whether flying through the air on two wheels or sliding sideways on four, Jerry lived for the roar of engines and the applause of the crowd.

A true racing fan through and through, Jerry followed every kind of motorsport — from motorcycles to stock cars — and was a lifelong Buffalo Bills supporter, cheering them on through every season.

Jerry is survived by his son, Gerald W. Henderberg, Jr. and his fiancé, Anne Grinolds; stepchildren, Robin Esche (Joanne) and Deborah Ferlo; special friend, Beverly Esche; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald Henderberg; and a stepdaughter, Diane Esche; three grandsons and several nieces and nephews, including Dale Henderberg, with whom he was very close.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours Interment will take place in Lee Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jerry’s memory to the Humane Society of Rome.
