Gary Nelson

Gary L. Nelson, 71, passed away at home on July 28, 2025. He was born on June 19, 1954 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Harold and Betty (McRoden) Nelson. Gary was a graduate of The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Class of ‘77. He spent 46 years in the mining industry as a metallurgical engineer.

In 1976, Gary married Carol Farmer, and they celebrated 49 years together. They enjoyed traveling together visiting many places in the US and internationally to Scotland, Chile, and the Philippines.

Gary was an avid golfer and a board member at The Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Nelson; and three children: Blake Nelson, (Spokane, Washington); Larissa Nelson (Manila, the Philippines); Valerie Nelson and son-in-law, Daniel McMonagle (Glasgow, Scotland); his brother, Brent Nelson (Rapid City, South Dakota); sister, Sherilyn (Scott) Carmody, (Sioux Falls, South Dokota) and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of Gary’s life at 3:00 PM on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at the Yates Funeral Home – Hayden Chapel, 373 E. Hayden, Idaho 83835. You are invited to wear a golf shirt or similar attire. Please join us for a reception following the service.
