Edna Cooper

Joan Doxey Cooper, 84, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away on August 11, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Born in Aydlett, NC, she was the daughter of the late Mark Edward Doxey and Edna Overton Doxey. She was married for 65 years to her husband, Jack A. Cooper.

A faithful member of Corinth Baptist Church, Joan was active in the WMU and assisted in Sunday School classes, where she encouraged her grandchildren to learn their Bible verses. She was active with the Food Bank of the Albemarle, Meals on Wheels, and Baptist Children’s Home. She enjoyed planting flowers, helping her son with his business, and ensuring her daughter’s yard was bright with blooms in every season. Joan worked alongside her husband for many years at his State Farm Agency and later assisted her daughter with accounting, a skill she excelled in.

She is survived by her husband, Jack A. Cooper; her children, Gary A. Cooper (Kim), and Dawn Covington (Jeff); her grandchildren, Miriam Cooper, Miles Cooper, Logan Elliott, and Worth Elliott; and her sister, Rosalie Doxey Jones, wife of the late Howard Jones. She was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Mark Edward Doxey, Jr. and James Mason Doxey (Clarine).

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2025 at Corinth Baptist Church. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall of the church and at other times at the home of Dawn and Jeff Covington. A private burial will take place at the family cemetery in Aydlett, NC.
