Firefighters were able to get a solid handle on the Conner Fire burning southeast of Gardnerville on Monday, with containment at 51 percent around the fire area that has burned more than 17,700 acres.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in its Monday evening briefing, the fire showed minimal activity, with smoldering and creeping behavior observed along much of the perimeter.
In some areas, firefighters observed single tree torching, where individual trees ignite briefly, indicating the presence of residual heat, according to InciWeb. While these conditions are generally low intensity, they still require careful monitoring and mop-up to ensure the fire does not reignite or spread under changing weather conditions.
For Tuesday, firefighters will continue constructing direct line utilizing ground and aviation resources along the flanks of the fire and securing existing line, and will continue to gain access to fire perimeter to allow for direct line suppression and minimize loss of any previously unburned vegetation in sage grouse habitat while protecting sensitive cultural resources, according to the BLM.
At last report, there is a 10 to 20 chance for showers and storms in the fire area Tuesday afternoon and evening. The concern is the storms may produce strong outflow winds with little rain.
Meanwhile, forecasters have said winds will become breezy from the west each afternoon from Wednesday through the weekend. Temperatures trend upward this week with decreasing relative humidities.
As noted Monday, Topaz Lake has reopened. See InciWeb for the latest fire updates.
