Carson City Rotarians to learn about Reno’s rise to fame and notoriety in early 1900s
- October 26, 2025

By Denise Clodjeaux — Local historians and authors David and Gayle Woodruff will be the featured speakers at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting.
The Woodruffs will perform “The Reno Cure a Living Presentation” which explores Reno’s rise in popularity in the early 1900s. The public is invited to attend the meeting which takes place, Tuesday, Oct. 28, at noon in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom.
Woodruff says there is a misconception about the beginnings of the Biggest Little City. “It wasn’t just the introduction of legalized gambling in 1931 that brought the town its fame and notoriety,” he explains. “For the first half of the 20th century, hundreds of thousands of people came to the Truckee River town as well as all of Western Nevada, to get a ‘quickie’ dissolution to their marriage.”
The Woodruff’s will portray fictional Reno Divorce Ranch characters Clive and Vivian Sterling, as they recount the unique, interesting, and often amusing history of the Reno divorce industry and its divorce ranches in a living history presentation.
David and Gayle Woodruff have lived in the Eastern Sierra and Lake Tahoe area for most of their lives. They are the authors of eight books on local and regional history,
Anyone interested in attending should email carsoncitynvrotary@gmail.com. The Brewery Arts Center is located at 449 West King Street in Carson City.
