- June 30, 2025

A 61-year-old Carson City man was arrested June 27 for suspicion of felony domestic battery with strangulation and other offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.
Following an investigation, deputies arrested Kirk James Renshaw. He was also booked for misdemeanor Department of Alternative Sentencing violation, obstructing/resisting and being an ex-felon failing to register.
According to the booking report, deputies were called to the 1100 block of South Nevada Street at 2:14 a.m. for a report of a domestic battery.
Deputies arrived and met with the victim, who’s stated her boyfriend choked her out while she was trying to get away from him when they got into a fight and altercation after going out to a bar. She said she ran away from the man and thought he had left the house in his car.
The woman declined medical treatment. The deputy asked if she had any marks, cuts or bruising on her body. She showed the deputy her neck, which had red marks on the right side. The marks on her neck were consistent with choking or strangulation marks, the report states.
The woman then showed the deputy her arms, which had scrapes and red marks that were consistent with wrestling on the ground. She stated her legs were hurting from wrestling on the ground with the man. Photos of the injuries were taken for evidence, the report states.
The deputy asked if she wanted to go back to her house. She stated she did but only if the man was gone. The deputy and his partners informed the woman that they would need to visit the residence to ensure nobody was present and that it was safe for her to stay inside. She took a seat in the back of a patrol vehicle for her safety.
Before deputies arrived at the residence that she shared with the man, she stated that she saw his car. Dispatch advised the man was associated with this vehicle due to a previous interaction involving a DUI. The woman stated the man would be in the area due to seeing his vehicle, the report states.
Because the vehicle was in the parking lot, and the woman was safe in the patrol vehicle, she was asked for consent to enter the residence. She stated she would consent.
Deputies approached the residence and knocked on the front door, which opened on its own. When the door opened, the deputy noticed the door jam was broken and had wood that was the same color as the door frame, all over the floor, along with a dent underneath the door handle. This is consistent with someone forcing the door open, the report states.
After the door opened, the deputy yelled out “sheriff’s department, anyone inside, make yourself known.” Other deputies yelled it several more times and nobody inside replied or made themselves known.
At this time, the deputy returned to the patrol vehicle and asked the woman again if it was OK for deputies to enter the residence, in which she stated consent to enter the home, the report states.
When deputies entered the residence they encountered the man asleep on the second floor. He was woken up, where deputies could smell the odor of alcohol. Dispatch advised the man was on DAS due to his DUI. Part of his sentencing was not to drink, the report states. He admitted to deputies that he drank that night. Due to the admission of drinking and other signs of alcohol use, he was asked to provide a preliminary breath test. He refused to provide a PBT.
Deputies advised the man to stand up and get out of bed. He stood up and then began resisting attempts to place him into handcuffs. Due to his non-compliance, deputies deployed their taser to gain compliance. After he was tasered, he was placed into handcuffs, the report states.
When he was brought down the stairs and outside, deputies made contact with him to get his side of the story. He stated that the woman was the aggressor during the altercation and that he was the one who was tackled and that she ran away screaming. The man had some scrapes on his knees that were consistent with him being on the ground, the report states.
He also stated that his knees hurt and advised this could be a result of him kicking the door in. He consented to a PBT this time with a result of .248. He was arrested and taken to jail. He was asked if he had registered as a convicted felon in Carson City. He advised he had not registered and would do so after his release from jail.
Due to his comments and dispatch advising that he had not registered as a convicted felon, he was also booked for ex-felon failing to register. Bail: $7,500 for the alleged felony domestic battery with strangulation and $3,000 cash for DAS violation.
