ADELINE SHANAFELT

Adeline Bidabé Shanafelt, 86 years old, passed away peacefully at home in Concord, California, early in the morning on October 1, 2025. She was surrounded by her family and those that loved her after a 3-and-a-half-year battle with lung and breast cancer. She was a warrior, a realist, and accomplished her goal of seeing her grandsons begin their careers. Though her age contradicted it, she was very much a young soul, easy to talk to and finding common ground with most people. All who really knew her could be their authentic selves.

A California native, and proud Mexican-American, she was born on July 10, 1939, in the city of Bakersfield, and raised in Tehachapi with her parents and 7 siblings. She moved to San Francisco after graduating high school. It was there that she met her first husband Leo Girot, with whom she had her only child, Lisa.

Adeline was proud of her Mexican heritage, especially the fact that her grandfather was a Colonel in the Mexican Revolution, serving alongside Pancho Villa. Her grandfather would often serve as the Grand Marshal of parades in Bakersfield. Adeline marched with Cesar Chavez, and donated her time to Glide Memorial Church when she moved to San Francisco. She loved the Bay Area, especially “The City”, because of its diversity, culture and the opportunities it provided her.

Adeline loved all aspects of pop culture. She was an avid follower of the Royals, movie stars, and her guiltiest of pleasures…”novelas”. She also loved trains & Wonder Woman. Her favorite music was Mariachi, especially Vicente Fernández. She also loved the Motown sound. Adeline was an avid reader, she particularly enjoyed biographies and history. She also had a voracious appetite for news, never missing a chance to watch the news magazine shows on Sunday mornings. She also never missed an opportunity to get in on the most recent chismes (gossip) by watching TMZ or Extra.

She loved her family dearly, especially her daughter, son-in-law and grandsons. She enjoyed Sunday family dinners, holidays, and talking about her childhood and life experiences growing up in Tehachapi, often recounting the story of how she “hopped a boxcar” in Tehachapi and ended up in Barstow, and how upset her daddy was when he had to go pick her up.

Adeline is preceded in death by her parents Martin Morales Bidabé and Petra (Jiménez) Bidabé, siblings: Madeline Bidabé , Marguerite Bidabé , Sylvia Bidabé and Martin Bidabé Jr. She is survived by her daughter Lisa (Girot) Martínez, son-in-law Luis Martínez, grandsons Leo & Armando Martínez. Her siblings Patricia Bidabé (Knight), Suzanne Bidabé (Arotzarena), Gerald Bidabé and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is loved and will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.

Services will be announced at a later date.
