In Loving Memory of Henrietta Mae Wright – ‘Bertie’
Henrietta Mae Wright, lovingly known as “Bertie,” departed this world on May 21, 2025, at the age of 98. She was a deeply kind soul—her quiet strength, gentle presence, peaceful nature, and enduring smile brought ease and comfort to all who knew her. Though we grieve her passing deeply, we are grateful for the beautiful life and memories she gave us.
Bertie was a longtime resident of the Ken Caryl Ranch neighborhood in Littleton, Colorado. She was born in Mount Harris, Colorado, a once-thriving mining town near Hayden in the scenic Yampa Valley. She was the cherished daughter of Esequiel Genera and Rosario (Lopez) Genera, who emigrated from Mexico to the United States together and proudly became American citizens. Bertie was a true Colorado native and a devoted fan of the Denver Broncos.
Esequiel and Rosario raised seven children. Esequiel, a coal and gold miner, was often away for months at a time, leaving Rosario—lovingly called “Rose”—to raise their family alone in Denver. Despite many hardships, all of Bertie’s siblings grew into individuals marked by quiet resilience, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to kindness. Their children, in order from eldest to youngest, were: Marcos (Mark), Esther, Donald, Margaret, Josephine, Henrietta “Bertie,” and little Bellia, who passed away at the tender age of four. Bertie was the last surviving member of her beloved family, a quiet keeper of their stories and spirit. Through every season of life, Bertie and her siblings shared a bond rooted in tenderness and unwavering love—one that endured beautifully over the years.
Bertie shared a deep and enduring love with her first husband, Joseph “Joe” Whitmore, until his untimely passing at age 50. Together they had four daughters Barbara, Georgi, Nancy, and Shirley (Mike). After Joe’s passing, she found companionship and love again, marrying Erwin Wright, who became her devoted husband in later years. She also shared a warm and loving relationship with her stepson, Wayne. Though Barbara and Georgi passed before her, their memories remain vibrant in the hearts of our family.
Bertie adored her eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy and pride. Her daughters cherished her deeply and continue to carry forward the love and wisdom she instilled in them. Above all, her family was her heartbeat. She often said to give their work “a lick and a promise,” trusting that her words would be honored simply because “Mom said so.”
A woman of quiet fortitude, Bertie made the most of every circumstance. She had a natural talent for cooking, especially her homemade Mexican food—and her values and traditions brought her family together in a home filled with warmth and love. A member of the “Greatest Generation,” she was raised during the Great Depression, lived through the sacrifices of World War II, and carried the virtues of humility and frugality throughout her life. Yet, she always managed to create a household that felt full of love and abundance.
Bertie worked faithfully for the Colorado Department of Highways for 25 years. Through steady advancement, she eventually took on a leadership role in Central Files before retiring with pride and dignity. Her kind demeanor, thoughtful leadership, and sense of fairness were hallmarks of her character and professionalism.
For nearly 30 years, Bertie was a devoted member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, where her faith was a source of comfort and community. She found joy and friendship in the church’s senior group, the Silver Strands, and she especially loved Bingo days and the group’s outings to Black Hawk, Colorado—where she delighted in playing the nickel slots.
Bertie’s love for animals brought her immense joy throughout her life. If you would like to honor her memory, a donation in her name to an animal shelter or rescue organization of your choice would surely have warmed her heart.😊
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Henrietta “Bertie” Wright on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, located at 6673 W Chatfield Ave, Littleton, Colorado. Inurnment at Fort Logan National Cemetery will be June 5th at 1:30 P.M. at Staging area “A”. Live-streaming of the Mass will be available for those unable to attend in person. Details will be shared with family and friends soon.
