Margaret “Marge” Ellen McGurk, 94, died peacefully Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 7 PM, Monday, October 28, 2024 at the Church, where a rosary will be recited at 4:30 PM. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Oxford.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Mt. Calvary Cemetery or St. Mary’s Church Altar and Rosary Society.

Margaret was born January 31,1930 in Oxford, the daughter of Carl and Cecelia (Newkirk) Gorvin. She was a graduate of Oxford High School and a lifelong resident of the town. On December 26, 1953 Margaret married William T. McGurk at St. Mary Catholic Church in Oxford.

Marge was employed for many years with ACT.

She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society, including serving on the Parish Council and helping oversee many church activities well into her 80s. Marge volunteered at the Oxford Public Library and served on the Library Board. She was a member of the Nemora Club and the Iowa Rural Carriers Auxiliary. She enjoyed helping and attending Super Sixties in Oxford for many years. She lived a big life, deeply loved her family and the Oxford community, was an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling with her friends and family, including trips to Ireland and Rome. She was loved by all for her sense of humor, good nature, and no-nonsense approach to life.

Marge is survived by her three children, Shaun (Shelly) McGurk of Iowa City, Shane (Deb) McGurk of Longmont, CO, and Melana (Todd) Beuse of West Des Moines. Grandchildren, Megan (Richard) Moffitt, Ryan (Rebecca) McGurk, Brian (Kassie) McGurk, Michaella (Tyler) Bergamo, Ashleigh Beuse, Abby Beuse, Hannah Beuse, Walt Beuse. Great-Grandchildren, Gabe Moffitt, Gavin McGurk, Aiden Bergamo, Blair Bergamo, Mackenzie (Dan) Bianco, and Nick (Breena) Moffitt. Great, Great Grandchild, Annora Moffitt.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1977; her sister, Mary K. Kutcher; brother, James Gorvin; and her grandson Adam McGurk.

She enjoyed the camaraderie and helpfulness of the wonderful staff at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City over the past years. Our family is extraordinarily grateful for the care, consideration, and friendship that the staff provided her.
