Jimmy, 73, resident of Iowa Veteran Home, Marshalltown, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at University of Iowa Hospital after battling respiratory illness. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is assisting the family.

Jim rarely did things in the usual way. Graduated from Jefferson High School in 1969. Jim served in the Army from 3/12/1970 to 1/11/1972 during the Vietnam conflict. In his teens he worked on and drove a 60’s Hillman Husky 1965 GTO and 1962 Studebaker Hawk.

He never answered a question or request with a no and was always willing to lend a helping hand to his fellow veterans living at the Iowa Veterans Home such as running errands, doing their laundry, or shopping for them.

He had a strong support group as a resident of The Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, from 2007 to this passing. Jim’s high energy level kept him busy with the Resident Council and multiple positions at the Facility.

Jim is survived by brother Jeff (Sharon) Smith of Georgetown, Texas, nieces Jennifer (Josh) Clemann of Tama, Iowa, Haleigh Smith, Cedar Park, Texas and nephew Mason Smith, Austin, Texas. Also great-nieces and -nephews, Raelynn Clemann, Hunter Clemann and Halie Clemann.

Preceded in death father and mother Marvon Smith and Irene Smith and sister Diane Smith.
