Phillip Stoos, 81, of Marion, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 26, 2024, at The Fountains Assisted Living, Bettendorf, Iowa. Please bring your favorite story of Phil and join the family for a Celebration of Life on Saturday, August 17, 2024, from 4-6:00 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 625 31st Street, Marion. Military honors will be conducted at 5:30 p.m.

Phil was born on August 24, 1942, in Alton, Iowa, son to Joseph and Loretta (Miller) Stoos. Phil graduated from Yankton High School, South Dakota, in 1962, and enlisted into the United States Navy until his honorable discharge in 1966. While he was in the Navy, his family relocated to Marion, Iowa, where Phil would call his home. His naval career took him around the world, but his heart remained anchored in the simple pleasures of life. After the Navy, Phil met his first wife, Eileen Zieser, and were married on September 23, 1967. They settled in Marion and began raising their family. Eileen died of cancer in 1985, and Phil met his second wife, Mary “Mickey” Hayes-Buchanan and married on July 10, 1987, in Marion, Iowa.

Phil worked at Quaker Oats for 31 years, until his retirement on December 9, 2001. Phil lived a life rich in experiences, music, and joy. He was a long-term member of the American Legion in Marion, Iowa. As an avid outdoorsman, Phil found immense joy in fishing, camping, and hunting. Whether casting a line or swapping stories with friends, he cherished the peaceful moments spent by the water. He loved fishing trips to Nestor Falls, Ontario, Canada where he was proud of his big musky replication that hung on his wall. He and his wife, Mickey enjoyed dancing, traveling, and spent many winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. Phil could often be found tapping his toes to a country tune, and his dance moves were the life of every gathering.

Phil’s spirit touched everyone he met. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He leaves behind his children, Denise (Jimmy), Jim (Stacy) and Cyndi (Joel); stepchildren, Debra (Randy) Vogel and Randy (Mary) Buchanan; his cherished grandchildren, Corbin, Graham, Chase, Kyle, Jackson, Max, Cooper, Carys, Tara, and Shauna; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eileen; parents, siblings (Esther Wright, Joseph Stoos, Joann Juarez, Bernadine Plumb, Donald Stoos, and Dennis Stoos) and second wife, Mickey.

Phil will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his love of the outdoors, his zest for country music, his joyful dance moves, and for laughing and telling stories with family and friends. May he rest in peace, knowing he lived a life well-loved and well-lived.
