Norma (Stokes) Powers, 94, of Springfield passed away on Friday, January, 7, 2022 at her home. She was born October 27, 1927 in Scranton, PA, the daughter of Gerald and Ruth (Blöch) Stokes. She married Wilbur Powers on October 19, 1946 and he preceded her in death in 1997.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Leslie, son, Michael and brother, Thomas Stokes.
She is survived by her daughters, Patrice Powers of Springfield and Janet (Bill) Roberts of South Haven, MI; son, Scott (Jayne) Powers of Decatur; nine loving grandchildren and nine adorable great-grandchildren, with one on the way; brother, Kit Stokes of CA; and several nieces and nephews.
Norma’s family moved to Springfield in 1933. She attended St. Peter and Paul grade school and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1946. Norma retired from Memorial Medical Center in 1989 after 20 years of service, mainly in the Business Office.
Norma and her husband, Wilbur enjoyed family camping trips and many adventures tent camping before working their way up to a fifth wheel to winter in Texas for many years in retirement. She was very interested in current events and liked to read, at least until it started just putting her to sleep! She was an avid football fan and surprised many with her knowledge of the game and the players. She would try and watch the Bears, as she was a life-long fan, but one can only take so much disappointment! Above all else, Norma loved her family.
After moving to a retirement community, Norma cherished the many friends she made and was kept entertained playing cards and doing crossword puzzles.
