Upcoming volunteer training planned for Night Off the Streets warming center in Carson City
- October 13, 2025
Night off the Street, also known as NOTS, runs seven days a week in the winter months.” data-medium-file=”https://i0.wp.com/www.carsonnow.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/129066-notsroom2.png?fit=300%2C217&ssl=1″ data-large-file=”https://i0.wp.com/www.carsonnow.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/129066-notsroom2.png?fit=780%2C565&ssl=1″ />
Night Off the Streets of Carson City will conduct its annual volunteer training on Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. and Oct. 25 at 9:30 a.m. at the Carson City Methodist Church, 200 North Division Street.
Volunteers and those seeking to learn about volunteering at the winter warming center need to attend only one of the training sessions, according to Jodi Miller, NOTS Manager.
The training prepares volunteers to serve in the warming center. Participants learn about the nightly duties on the three shifts at the warming center each night. They also learn ways to interact with guests at the shelter and how to handle emergencies.
An optional resource fair will be held 30 minutes prior to each training session. The resource fair will highlight services available to the unhoused in the community. This knowledge is useful when speaking with the guests in the warming center.
For those unable to attend one of the training sessions, a training video will be available to review. All volunteers must receive training before serving in the warming center.
More than 100 people volunteer during the winter season at the warming center. People also donate food and socks as well as their money.
“Night Off the Streets would not exist without the community’s support,” says NOTS Manager Jodi Miller.
Night Off the Streets was founded eight years ago after four homeless people died of hypothermia while sleeping outdoors. Since opening the night-time center, no one has died from exposure to the cold in Carson City, except for people newly arrived in town who did not know about the shelter. These tragic cases emphasize the value of the services provided by Night Off the Streets to save lives.
Night Off the Streets expects increased numbers of people sleeping in the warming center this winter. Lack of affordable housing is one reason the numbers of unhoused people are growing in Carson City, especially among the senior population.
The warming center is open from Nov. 1 through March 31 each year. Depending on the weather, the center may remain open beyond March 31 if freezing temperatures continue into April.
