Marie Wells

Marie Williamson Wells, age 83, of Marion, passed away on Friday, August 22, 2025, at Mission Hospital – McDowell, surrounded by her loving family.

Marie was born on July 24, 1942, in Waynesboro, GA, to the late William “Reuben” Williamson and Sadie Mae Vickery Williamson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Marie Elizabeth “Libby” Mckeehan, and her son, Richard Wright Joyner.

Marie grew up during hard times, in a dirt-floor shack where money was scarce. Her upbringing made her tough, independent, and resilient. Though she could be stubborn, she had a playful spirit and loved to cut up and make others laugh.

She worked for Kendall in Augusta, GA, for more than 30 years before retiring. In 2007, Marie moved to Marion, NC, to be closer to her family. She enjoyed simple pleasures—sitting on her porch, watching the birds, and even shooting squirrels with her pellet rifle or slingshot, a skill she had mastered in her younger days when her efforts sometimes helped put food on the table.

Marie loved “real” homecooked food and was an excellent cook herself. She especially enjoyed family meals, with a particular fondness for her grandson Joshua’s French toast. In addition to cooking, she loved dancing, music, reading, and telling stories. Her storytelling brought joy to many, and she will be remembered for the warmth, humor, and strength she shared with those around her.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Larry Dean Joyner of Lake Waccamaw, NC, Leeann Joyner Gainey (Nolen) of Old Fort, and Theresa Wells of Marion; fourteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sadie Aileen Hilmus of Michigan.

In keeping with Marie’s wishes, no services will be held at this time.
