Sybil Miller

Sybil Drake Miller, of Webster, peacefully slipped away from us on July 26, 2025, at age 101.

Sybil was born February 7, 1924, in Webster and spent her whole life in the Rochester area. A child of the Depression, Sybil suffered a painful childhood, losing both of her parents by the time she was 12 years old. Despite that, she went on to lead a most loving, joy-filled, long life with her ever-present beautiful smile and welcoming greeting to all.

Sybil attended Genesee Nursing College from which she graduated with an R.N. degree in 1947. She worked nights as a private nurse for many years so she could be home with her children during the day. In her retirement, Sybil volunteered at Rochester General to provide a quiet smile and comforting arm to patients and their families. A woman of faith, she was always active with the Brighton Reformed Church. There, she and her family made life-long friends.

Mom was devoted to her family. She encouraged her children’s education and enabled them to follow their dreams no matter where they led. She willingly helped early on Sunday mornings to deliver the newspaper; she faithfully transported her children to the YMCA and piano lessons. She and Dad traveled around the country to see their children and grandchildren, wherever they lived. Her quiet, yet disciplined, presence shaped her children’s lives.

Mom loved the outdoors and flowers. Anytime someone visited her in her final years, even in winter, she would love to go outside and sit by the pond at St. Ann’s Cherry Ridge Community to watch the birds. Every spring sent her to the garden store for flowers. Her house was always filled with plants and flowers that gave her such pleasure. Her house seemed always to have the warm aroma of something baking, such as a pie, chocolate cake or chocolate chip cookies!

Sybil is survived by her three children: Larry Miller of California, Laurie Sullivan of Prattsburg, NY, and Lee Miller of Arizona; seven grandchildren: Jonathan Miller, Rebecca Rogers, Jacklyn Reis, Jenn Elle, Kristie Suarez, Andrew Miller, and Jacob Miller; and twelve great grandchildren: Ayanna and Seiji Miller, Jomei and Enso Rogers, Jocelyn Reis, Nickolav, Jackson, and Elliana Suarez, Clara and Charlotte Miller, and Jaden and Bennett Miller. She is predeceased by her husband John “Jack” Miller, and her five siblings.

We are grateful to the staff at St. Ann’s Community at Cherry Ridge for the loving care they gave Mom for the past several years. We always slept better knowing that she was well cared for. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Ann’s Foundation, Star Fund, 1500 Portland Ave., Rochester, New York 14621, or the donor’s favorite charity.

Viewing hours will be held on Friday, August 8, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Anthony Chapels, (2305 Monroe Avenue, Rochester, NY). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann’s Community at Cherry Ridge, 900 Cherry Ridge Blvd., Webster, NY. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
