Mary Schuttenberg

Mary Lynn Hartman Schuttenberg, 82, was born to eternal life on July 30, 2025, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Lynn was born on November 17, 1942, in Toledo, Ohio, to Mary and Edward Hartman. An only child, she grew up on a quiet, tree-lined street surrounded by family and neighborhood friends. At the age of eight, she lost her father suddenly, an experience that shaped her deep belief in the importance of family as the foundation of a meaningful and beautiful life.

A lifelong learner, Lynn found comfort in school and excelled academically. She graduated from DeVilbiss High School, where she served as editor of the school newspaper. She went on to earn an English degree from Ohio University in just three years, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and joining the Chi Omega sorority. Her involvement in service through her sorority would shape a life dedicated to giving back. For more than 60 years, Lynn exchanged letters every February with her Chi Omega sisters, sharing life’s milestones.

While at Ohio University, Lynn met Jim on a blind date to a football game, beginning a love story that would last more than six decades. After two years apart, they married in 1963 and moved to Daytona Beach, Florida, where Jim worked on the space program. Lynn taught English at Mainland Senior High School and studied library science.

In 1967, they welcomed their daughter, Laurel. A few years later, Jim’s career took them to Phoenix, Arizona, where sons David, born in 1970, and Doug, born in 1974, completed their family. Lynn embraced life in Arizona, forming close friendships that lasted for decades – the closest of which were formed with the Bridge Club and the Wine and Tapas Group.

Over the years, Lynn taught sewing, became a CPA, worked in public accounting, led the Del Webb corporate tax department, and ultimately retired as Vice President of Human Resources for Del Webb in 2001. Lynn Schuttenberg was, in every sense, a trailblazer.

Lynn and Jim shared a love for travel. What began with business trips evolved into a passion that took them to more than 60 countries through cruises and tours. They also spent many summers at their cabin in Blue Ridge, Arizona, enjoying cooler weather and time with friends. She loved family trips to Mission Beach, Disneyland, and camping on the beaches of Rocky Point. Annual reunions in Siesta Key with extended family created lasting traditions. She and Jim celebrated their 45th, 50th and 55th anniversaries with family cruises and vacations that brought everyone together.

In retirement, Lynn and Jim became active members of the Terravita community in north Scottsdale and sang in the Our Lady of Joy church choir for 25 years. Lynn was an avid reader, a passionate traveler, and a devoted woman of faith. Her love for God shaped the way she lived her life, marked by kindness, grace, and dedication. She cared deeply for her family and especially cherished time with her children and grandchildren. She was the glue that held them all together.

Lynn is survived by her husband, Jim, of 62 years; their daughter Laurel of Maui, and grandchildren Zachary (Aubrey), Lindsey, and Grayson; their son David (Tina) of Charleston, SC, and granddaughter Jess; and their son Douglas (Tiffany) of Chandler, AZ, and grandchildren Ellie and Reid. She was preceded in death by her parents and extended family.

Visitation will be held at Messinger Mortuary, 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd, Scottsdale, Arizona, on Thursday, August 7, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 8, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church in Carefree, Arizona.

A private family burial will follow at Holy Redeemer Catholic Cemetery in Phoenix.
